Dear Corban, Sometimes Right Can Be Wrong

Dear Corban,

It sounds strange I know, but being right can sometimes be wrong.  It might be difficult for you grasp this notion in its entirety.  It may be even more difficult for me to explain it.  Let me try though.

Daddy preached the sermon this past Sunday.  He talked about how God wants us to love our enemies.  This is the right thing to do.  Yet, sometimes loving them can be wrong.  Now, wait a minute before you drop your jaw and think that Mommy is crazy.  I’m not.  What I mean is that you should never approach your enemies with the kind of love that is out of spite.  Using your father’s example, you should never think like this, “I’ll just love ‘em.  I’ll be good to ‘em and do nice things for ‘em.  That’ll show ‘em.”  That is the wrong thing to do.

To love them out of spite is a perversion of the truth.  You cannot fight evil with evil.  Only when your love for your enemy is sincere will you be able to truly make a difference.  That kind of love heaps burnings coals on the head of your enemy.  Burning coals have the ability to awaken your enemy to his or her divisive ways.  They can even be a step toward repentance and faith.

My advice to you is to always take the path of love and humility.  Spiritual love is powerful.  It can change people, including your enemies.  A sincere love for your enemies will certainly get their attention.  Allow God to do the rest.

Love,

Mom
